Much to the dismay of Bucky O’Dare, Nova Morgan and her inflicted crew head out on a dangerous mission in the realm of Hindra in order to rescue one of their friends who has been kidnapped. Now Bucky is tasked with holding down the fort back in London, but he kept help but miss his best friend Nova and his lover Ruth.
Things don’t stay quiet for long when the body of Lady Jaine, the Madam and owner of one of the prominent brothels is found murdered. What makes everything even more suspect is the new client that immediately takes over Lady Jaine’s new place, which comes with even more bodies left in their wake. Bucky decides it’s time to put the drink down, put on his detective hat, and uncover what exactly is happening in the dark London streets.
I’ll be honest, for the first fifty or so percent of this novella, I wasn’t really sure what I had gotten myself into. I was a bit on the fence with Bucky. He’s brash and standoffish. But, when it counts, Bucky really pulls through and by the end I was definitely rooting hard for him.
Since this is a novella, the action starts from the very beginning and the pacing holds steady throughout. There’s lots of twists and turns as we get into the nitty gritty of who is murdering the local prostitutes (very Jack the Ripper esque). There were a lot of interesting characters that we met along the way who ended up being major players in this story.
The last twenty percent of this book had me at the edge of my seat…and that cliffhanger? Yeah, I am definitely interested in reading the other stories so I can find out more. Overall, this is a great read, and I highly recommend it.
